Intonation adjustment

On most electric instruments, the characteristics of the bridge can make this adjustment, for acoustic instruments, however, it is more difficult to see almost impossible. In this case, we must adjust other parameters to fine tune, once again the best advice would be to see your favorite luthier. If you buy a new acoustic instrument , make sure it is fair to the octave, it will avoid many disappointments.

To determine if the intonation of your instrument is correct, simply compare the frequency of the harmonic at the twelfth fret with the fretted string at the twelfth fret: they must be identical. And that for each string! An electronic tuner can help you. If this is not the case, it will be necessary to modify the vibrating length of the string. It is imperative that all the settings listed above are made, and it is only valid if your strings are new!

On acoustic guitars, it is usual to use saddle fairly simple. The compensation is made during the construction and change is usually not very simple. You can correct a small extent, if your instrument is not just, by filing the bridge saddle slightly using a file to move forward or backward the point of contact of each strings. Take care because one hand this is irreversible, the other can change the action if you file down too much (so see your luthier if you're not sure). Possible gaps are very limited with this type of bridge (between 2 and 3mm width), so better be sure of the correctness of the guitar before your purchase.
